Marta Fernández Castillo

ACADEMIC DEGREE

  • University degree in Health Engineering with specialty in Biomedical Engineering.
  • Master’s degree in Advanced Therapies and Biotechnological Innovation.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

She started her studies in the University of Málaga, where she graduated in Health Engineering with specialty in Biomedical Engineering. Due to her interest in the area of biotechnology she decided to continue learning about the subject by obtaining a master’s degree in Advanced Therapies and Biotechnological Innovation in the University Francisco de Vitoria in Madrid. It was then, during her External Practices program, that she walked her first steps in the professional field of science, precisely in the Laboratory of Immune Regulation.

Although she is currently working on exosome research, she initially started processing and analyzing human blood samples to study the immune system in patients with cardiac disease. The fact of participating in types of projects with such different scientific nature has provided her with a richer understanding of laboratory techniques, software analysis tools and experimental planning.

CURRENT ACTIVITY IN THE LABORATORY OF IMMUNE-REGULATION – Predoctoral researcher.

Responsible for exosome research, mainly focused on two lines of study:

  • Analysis of both functional and physical characteristics of exosomes obtained from thymic-derived regulatory T cells (thyTregs).
  • Use of plasma exosomes as biomarkers that could prevent rejection in pediatric heart-transplanted patients.
